Viannos - Heraklion Prefecture (Greece)
Viannos. Viannos, on the Greek island of Crete, actually consists of two villages, Ano Viannos (=upper) and Kato (= bottom) Viannos. Ano Viannos is situated on a slope of the Dikti mountain at 560 meters altitude. The villagers fought back very strongly against the Germans in World War II. In 1943, 440 men were shot in the village and 200 men were taken prisoner, while part of the village was bombed. The striking monuments along the way remember this tragedy. Ano Viannos is located approximately 65 kilometres southeast of Heraklion. There are several shops and small terraces. There is a small ethnographic museum and in the Agia Pelagia church on the hill, you can admire ancient frescos. The area is filled with Byzantine churches, with valuable frescoes. There are in the vicinity of the village small archaeological excavations of the Minoan period. In the village of Kato Viannos is the church of Sotiras which also contains beautiful frescoes.
