Servia - Kozani (Greece)

Servia: Servia is one of the main towns of the prefecture Kozani. It is the town that guards the pass to Thessaly. The town is located 28 kilometers (17 mi) southwest of Kozani city, and located near the Polifitos Lake. The bridge of Servia is the largest in Greece (1372 m/4500 ft long). The area around Servia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and there are many objects from that period found here. The main attraction however in Servia is the ruins of a Byzantine castle with twenty meters high towers built around the year 600. In the medieval ages, Servia was an important Byzantine center and the town consisted of an acropolis, and an upper and lower town. Three important Byzantine churches are well preserved with beautiful murals.
