Orestiada. Orestiada or Orestias is a city in the northeastern part of the prefecture of Evros in Thrace, Greece. Orestiada is 900 kilometres from Athens, 400 km from Thessaloniki and 325 km from Istanbul (Constantinople). Orestiada is located 114 km from the capital of the department of Alexandroupolis. It has about 20.000 inhabitants and is the second largest city of the department. The largest city, Alexandroupolis, has about 60.000 inhabitants.
Orestiada is a modern Greek city. This city is located in an important agricultural area with good rail and road links. In Orestiada is also the University of Thrace.
Orestiada, founded in 1923, is the newest and northernmost city of Greece. In the year 1923 there came Greek refugees from the region of Edirne (Andrianoupolis) to live, they came mostly from the suburb of Karagats. Karagats was then ceded to Turkey by the Treaty of Lausanne (July 23, 1923).
