Olympia. Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese in the province Elijah in Greece. Olympia is one of the most famous sites of Greece. For centuries it was a religious centre where sports were held. This is the place to which modern Olympic games owe their origin.
The western Peloponnese and especially the region between Patras and Olympia is privileged by nature. On both sides of the road from Patras to the sanctuary of Olympia are small towns and pretty villages. There are everywhere beautiful beaches. The region has numerous ruins of ancient cities, there are byzantine churches and ancient castles of significant archaeological and historical value.
In Olympia were held every four years in the summer Olympic Games. Since 776 BC. the names of the victors are recorded: this year is the beginning of the Greek era.
In Olympia are hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops and there is the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. Especially in summer, this place is visited daily by thousands of tourists and it is very busy.
