Gastouri. Gastouri is a traditional village on the Greek island of Corfu. It lies in the green hills, ten kilometres south of Corfu Town.
Gastouri is a huge tourist village because of the Palace of Achillion located here. Achillion is one of the most important monuments of Corfu. Who has heard of Empress Sissi of Austria? This Neoclassical palace was built for Empress Elisabeth at the end of the 19th century by an Italian architect. It is an impressive building with lovely grounds and beautiful gardens, lovely porches, impressive statues of Greek heroes, philosophers and the nine muses etc. Empress Sissi was completely out of Achilles, hence the name Achillion. In the garden is a giant statue of the Greek hero, that was put there by William II after Sissi died.
Regarding Gastouri itself; In the village there are some small hotels and guesthouses. There are a lot of souvenir shops and restaurants. Gastouri is located in a very nice green area with some beautiful churches.
