Chora (Astypalaia). The islanders of Astypalaia call their capital "Chora." Chora is not very large, and is located in a small bay with a harbor surrounded by hills. It is a picturesque village built on the slopes of a hill. The Venetian Castle of the Guerini Dynasty sits atop the hill. Two churches are within the castle walls, Evangelistria and Aghios Georgios.
Close to the port is the beach of Pera Gialos. Tucked behind the beach you’ll find many restaurants, taverns, cafeterias and good seafood restaurants. From here you can take a nice walk up stairs to the top of the castle. You’ll walk through narrow alleyways, alongside old-fashioned windmills and then arrive at the top through narrow stairs. The view from above is very picturesque. Below the castle is the church of Panagia Portaitissa built in 1762.
