Apollonia - Sifnos (Greece)
Apollonia. Apollonia is the ancient capital of the Greek island of Sifnos, in the Cyclades. It is a village with white houses, narrow streets and churches with blue domes. Many houses in the village have picturesque courtyards adorned with colorful flowers. Apollonia is built on three hills and consists of several small villages. These villages have been expanding and over the decades they’ve grown closer together. Primarily Kato and Pano Petali, but also Katavati and Artemonas form this municipal area.
The name Apollonia comes from the Greek god Apollo who was honored here in ancient times. In the village are all kinds of interesting churches, such as the Cathedral of Aghios Spyridon.
Interesting attractions in Apollonia:
- The church of Mary (Panagia Ouranofora) from the 18th century, with its imposing bell tower
- Monasteries in the region such as Aghios Ioannis Chrisostomos and Theologos o Mouggos
- Dovecotes in the region
- The folk museum with traditional items such as clothing, agricultural tools, and photographs
