Amfissa. Amfissa is the capital of the department of Fokida- Central Greece. In Amfissa, which is located about 200 kilometers west of Athens, live about seven thousand people. Most residents here are farmers and mainly occupy with the fields full of olive groves. Previously, the entire region was known for its leather work.
Amfissa is located in an area full of olive trees and is surrounded by mountains Gkiona and Parnassos. In town are some interesting museums such as the ethnographic museum, the Archaeological Museum, the Municipal and the children's library.
In antiquity the city was known as Salona. According Pafsanias 70.000 people lived here in ancient times. On a rock in the city are the ruins of the castle of Salona surrounded by a wall with large stones from the Mycenaean period. On top of it, Greeks, Byzantines, Franks and others built forts to protect themselves.
In Amfissa carnival and Easter is celebrated exuberantly. Amfissa is a vibrant town with many shops, restaurants and cafés.
